Video Stream ($) HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Looking for its first road win of the season, the Nicholls State University women's basketball team have two chances this week, starting Wednesday night at Sam Houston State. Tipoff at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Nicholls (3-10, 1-2 SLC) has lost back-to-back games after opening conference play with a win against Lamar. The Colonels fell at Houston Baptist, 80-71, before letting the lead slip away late against Abilene Christian in their last outing. The loss against ACU was a rarity at home for the Colonels as it was just their sixth setback in the last 30 conference games at Stopher Gym.
Despite the 1-2 record, the Colonels have played well since the start of their Southland schedule. The offense is averaging 69.3 points on 47 percent shooting and turnovers have reduced significantly at eight less per game.
Leading the way in scoring have been
LiAnn McCarthy and
Marina Lilly. McCarthy is averaging 17.7 points in conference play, while Lilly, who has recorded four straight double-doubles, is averaging 16.3 points on 63.6 percent shooting and 10.7 rebounds.
Cassidy Barrios and
Tia Charles are scoring 10.3 points, and
Taylor Morrison has come off the bench to average 8.3 points on 9 of 12 shooting.
Sam Houston (7-7, 3-1 SLC) will be looking to close out its three-game homestand undefeated after wins over Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans. The Bearkats won at Incarnate Word to start conference play, but were handed a 20-point loss at Northwestern State.
Sam Houston is led by guard Shernise Robertson, who is second in scoring in conference play at 18.8 points per game. Last year's top scorer, Robertson is one of two Bearkats averaging over 15 points as Angela Beadle is at 15.3 and is hauling in 11.0 rebounds.
The Bearkats lead the all-time series, 32-19, but Nicholls won last season in Thibodaux, 67-64, to snap a six-game losing streak in the series.
Following Wednesday's game, the Colonels will head to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, Jan. 16 for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
