Colonels shut out against Lamar

THIBODAUX, La.  – After winning its first conference match on Tuesday, the Nicholls State University volleyball team was unable to put together a winning streak as the Colonels were defeated by Lamar, 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-17), Thursday night at Stopher Gym.

The Colonels (6-19, 1-8) had no answer for Lamar's Chelsea Grant, who finished with 19 kills in the three-setter. Seniors Kaci Eaton and Kali Schwartz had six kills each for Nicholls, while Emily Weimer and Stephanie Tobison tallied five apiece. Jade Piper led the offense with 15 assists.

Nicholls put up a fight in the first set, hitting .229 against the Cardinals (5-16, 5-4). The Colonels led by as much as five points before Lamar tied it up at 14-all. Lamar tied it up again at 20, which was the beginning of a 4-0 run. Grant then slammed home a kill to end the set at 25-21.

Lamar wasted little time in taking a sizable advantage in the second set, racing out to a 14-4 lead. The visitors did the same in the third, grabbing an early 15-6 lead as they went on to sweep the Colonels.

Nicholls will continue its home stand with a matchup against HBU on Saturday, Oct. 22. First serve at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 12 p.m.
