HAMMOND, La. – For the second straight season, the Nicholls State University soccer team saw their postseason hopes put to rest by rival Southeastern Louisiana as the Colonels were defeated, 3-0, Friday night at Strawberry Stadium.
The matchup between the Colonels (6-8-2, 3-6-2 SLC) and SLU (7-10-2, 4-6-1 SLC) served as a play-in game for next week's Southland Conference Tournament. Nicholls was in the same scenario last season but was defeated at home by the Lady Lions, 2-1.
The Colonels fired off 10 shots in the loss, led by three from
Elisabet Gunnthorsdottir. Four of the shots were on target, but none got past SLU keeper Hope Sabadash.
The Lady Lions took the lead in the 29th minute when Christina Cutura scored off a corner kick. SLU tallied eight of its 15 shots in the first half, but headed into the break with just a 1-0 lead.
In the 63rd minute, Linda Karlsson gave SLU a 2-0 lead on her second goal of the season. Twelve minutes later, Maddie Kresevic put the game away after a mad scramble in front of the net.
Emily Werenskiold,
Jess Coates and
Haylee Atwell all recorded two shots each for the Colonels.
Roosa Hurmerinta took the loss in net, finishing with six saves.
