PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – Sophomore
Cassidy Barrios recorded a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, but the Nicholls State University women's basketball team was unable to climb all the way back from a 14-0 run by Prairie View A&M in the second quarter as the Colonels fell, 69-67, Tuesday afternoon at the William J. Nicks Building.
The loss dropped the Colonels to 0-2 on the season, with both setbacks coming on the road. Nicholls will open its home slate on Saturday against rival ULM at 1 p.m.
Barrios' second career double-double came on 7-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. The Colonels struggled as a team from behind the arc, making just 7-of-23.
Taylor Morrison also had three from downtown, finishing with 12 points.
Hope Pawlowski fouled out with 18 points and team-high five steals.
Nicholls had a total of 16 steals in the game, which helped fuel a late comeback. Despite trailing by double figures in the fourth quarter, the defense created opportunities for the Colonels as they fought back to within one point.
Following a 3-ball from Morrison with four minutes to go, Barrios followed up with a steal and a bucket before a steal from
Emani White led to a Barrios 3-pointer, making it a 64-61 game. The teams traded baskets down the stretch before Pawlowski picked up a steal and a layup to put the score at 68-67 with 50 seconds remaining.
The Colonels then forced a turnover and were able to get off one final shot, but it was no good. The Panthers added a free throw to make the final.
Joining the trio in double figures was freshman
Tykeria Williams, who had 11 points off the bench on 5-of-10 shooting. Williams also had a big game defensively by adding four steals.
