Thomas breaks blocks record as Colonels cruise past Night Hawks, 95-63

THIBODAUX, La.  – Nicholls State University senior Liam Thomas broke his own single-game blocks record with nine as he nearly recorded a triple-double and the Colonels cruised to a 95-63 victory over Thomas University (Ga.) on Sunday evening at Stopher Gym.

Thomas, who already holds the Colonels' season and career blocks records, matched his single-game mark in the first half alone, swatting away eight shots. He picked up one more in the second to break the record as he finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Thomas was one six Colonels to score in double figures in what was just Nicholls' second home contest of the season. DeAndre Harris had a game-high 22 points, helped by a 4-for-5 day from behind the arc, Ja'Dante' Frye finished with 15 points and nine rebounds, and Johnathan Bell added 12 points. Along with Harris off the bench, Stevie Repichowski scored 11 and Zach Young finished with 10.

Thomas, a seven-footer from Sydney, Australia, led an impressive defensive display by Nicholls (5-5) in the first half as the Colonels held the Night Hawks to just five field goals on 16 percent shooting. On offense, Nicholls drained six 3-pointers in the opening period and shot 46 percent to lead 43-19 at the break.

Thomas (Ga.) came out energized in the second half to trim the deficit to 19, but the Colonels responded with an 11-0 run after Jahvaughn Powell (9 points, 5 steals) sank back-to-back 3-pointers. The lead stayed around 30 for the rest of the way, with the majority of points coming at the free throw line as the teams combined for 36 fouls in the second half.

The Night Hawks shot just 31 percent for the game and 2-of-16 from long range. Javoris Cooks led TU with 21 points and was 10-for-10 at the line.

The Colonel defense totaled 15 blocks, with Adam Ward chipping in with five. Nicholls also recorded 13 steals off of 22 turnovers.

Nicholls will hit the road one last time before the holidays with a Wednesday night (Dec. 14) matchup against Texas Tech. Tipoff against the Red Raiders is scheduled for 8 p.m.
