Colonels Blanked by UT-Martin in Lion Classic Finale

HAMMOND, La. – Looking for a clean sweep of opening weekend in the Lion Classic, the Nicholls State University softball team sent their ace Hannah Haydel to the circle for the third time, but the Colonels were unable to plate a run as Tennessee-Martin claimed a 3-0 win over Nicholls on Sunday afternoon at North Oak Park.

Nicholls duplicated its performance from last year's Lion Classic, posting a 4-1 record. UT-Martin also finished at 4-1, with its lone loss coming against Southern Illinois.

Haydel (2-1) tossed five innings for the Red and Gray, allowing three earned runs on five hits. She finished with three strikeouts and walked three. Haydel issued free passes in the second, third and fifth innings, all resulting in a run for UT-Martin.

Haydel limited the damage in the second as the Skyhawks loaded the bases with two outs. An infield single gave UT-Martin a 1-0 lead, but she then forced a groundout to leave the bases full.

Leadoff walks in the third and fifth innings resulted in RBI singles by Renate Meckl, which proved to be more than enough offense for Skyhawk pitcher Alyss Vanlandingham.

The Colonels had five hits on the day, but could only move four runners into scoring position for the game. Two came in the bottom of the seventh with two outs as Payton Gremillion hit a double that moved pinch-hitter Kasey Frederick to third. But the threat ended when Vanlandingham forced a groundout by Brooke Morris for the final out. Gremillion and Morris each went 2-for-4 in the loss.

Freshman Megan Landry pitched 2.0  innings of relief, allowing one hit while striking out one. Landry had an impressive debut for the Colonels over the weekend, going 2-0 in the circle with 0.00 ERA and two hits allowed. Landry tossed a five-inning no-hitter in her first career game in the 11-0 win over Mississippi Valley State on Friday.

Nicholls will play at home for the first time on Wednesday, Feb. 17, as they host Jackson State for a doubleheader. First pitch at the Colonel Softball Complex is scheduled for 3 p.m . Admission to all home Colonel softball games is free of charge.
