THIBODAUX, La. – Coming off its third sweep of the season, the Nicholls State University softball team will have a chance to earn another series sweep as the Colonels head north to face Jackson State for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Nicholls (28-14) already defeated Jackson State (6-23) twice this season, taking down the Lady Tigers in a home twinbill on Feb. 17. The Colonels won game one, 7-4, and completed the sweep with a 6-4 in the second.
Freshman
Amanda Gianelloni, who was named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week on Monday, had a huge day against JSU as she tallied five hits and three RBIs. In the night cap, Gianelloni went 4-for-4 with two doubles while
Megan Landry tossed a complete game in the circle.
Gianelloni and senior
Danielle Phillips are battling it out for the team's batting crown as both are currently hitting .386 on the year. While Gianelloni had a monster series against UIW with a .750 batting average and six RBIs, Phillips was right behind by going 6-for-10 with a pair of doubles in the three games. Phillips has been a tough out as of late, hitting safely in 11 of the last 13 contests.
Landry and
Hannah Haydel both recorded wins in the previous meeting against JSU, and the duo improved their win total over the weekend as well. Haydel went 2-0 against UIW and received Southland Pitcher of the Week honorable mention, and Landry was 1-0 after tossing 6.2 with a 1.05 ERA.
Jackson State is coming three straight losses to Alabama State, which sits atop the SWAC standings with an unblemished record in conference. The Lady Tigers are led by Canessa Swanson in batting average (.416), runs scored (29) and RBIs (17). Swanson had a solid day at the plate against the Colonels in the doubleheader setback, going 3-for-6 with a RBI.
Following tonight's games, the Colonels will return home to host rival Northwestern State for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6 p.m.
