THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell into an early two-run hole against Alcorn State on Wednesday night, but the Colonels climbed their way back with four runs in the second inning and held on for a 6-4 victory at Ray E. Didier Field.
The win brings Nicholls' all-time record against the Braves to 25-0.
Trailing, 2-0, heading into the bottom of the second, the Colonels (22-27, 11-13 SLC) exploded for four runs to capture the lead.
Joey Morales notched an RBI single to right field, before a Manichia double brought
Ethan Valdez and Morales home. A
Justin Holt single to left field drove Manichia in, giving Nicholls a 4-2 advantage.
Kyle Knauth padded the Colonels' lead in the fifth with a solo bomb over the right field wall.
Alcorn State pulled within one after a two-run sixth, but Nicholls immediately answered with a Morales double that scored
Trevor Flynn.
Morales led the Colonels offensively with a 2-for-4 outing, two RBIs and a run scored. Manichia finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run. Flynn hit 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Valdez went 1-for-1 with a run. Knauth finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Cedric Walker paced Braves offense with a 1-for-3 night, two RBIs and a run.
Mike Hanchar (1-4) picked up the win, holding Alcorn State to just two hits with two strikeouts through three scoreless innings.
Hunter Speer earned his first career save, fanning one batter in the final hitless, scoreless inning.
George Helbig (3-8) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits through two innings on the hill.
Nicholls will host Northwestern State at 6 p.m. on Friday. Game two is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday, with the finale scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Colonels will then face Tulane at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17 in New Orleans.
