BIRMINGHAM, Ala – Saturday marked another tough day for the Nicholls State University volleyball team as it remained winless for the weekend with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-16) loss to Indiana State at the Samford Invitational.
Coming off a pair of setbacks in Friday's opening action, the Colonels (0-3) could not get anything going offensively as they were held to an .111 hitting percentage in the loss to Indiana State (2-1).
Emily Weimer paced Nicholls with seven kills at a .385 clip and added five blocks, while
Kaci Eaton had five kills and a team-high nine digs.
Ainsley Marroccoli assisted on half of the Colonels' kills as she tallied 11 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Things looked promising for Nicholls in the early going as the Red and Gray doubled up the opposition in the first set with an 8-4 lead. However, trailing 10-9, the Lady Sycamores put together 11 consecutive points to take a commanding 20-10 advantage. ISU went on to take the first set, 25-13.
The second set was close throughout, with Indiana State holding a slim advantage at the midway point. A kill by Eaton tied the score at 15-all before Weimer pushed Nicholls ahead with a kill for the 16-15 advantage. But with the score tied at 17-all, Indiana State reeled off the next five points en route to a 25-19 win.
The final set was much of the same as ISU pulled away with a 9-2 run for a 21-12 lead. Two errors pulled Nicholls within seven at 21-14 but the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as they were defeated 25-16 to end the match.
