Final Stats 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team dropped its fourth and fifth consecutive matches with a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) loss to ULM, followed by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-9) shutout against host Jacksonville State on Friday.
The Colonels (4-9) will aim to snap the skid on Saturday with matches against Kennesaw State (9 a.m.) and Evansville (4:30 p.m.). Live stats for both games will be available on geauxcolonels.com.
In the first match against ULM,
Stephanie Tobison had a team-high 11 kills while
Kaci Eaton slammed home 10.
Kali Schwartz finished with nine and
Emily Weimer had eight, but the team hit just .140 in the loss to the Warhawks (4-10).
The Colonels' lone victory came in the second set. The Red and Gray trailed 10-8 before putting together a 6-0 run. An ace by
Emily Venable put the score at set point at 24-19 before Nicholls had to fend off a late surge by ULM, winning 25-23 on a kill by
Brieanna Hill.
Alexa Perry paced the team with 16 digs and
Lucija Barac dished out 36 assists.
In the second match, the Colonels outplayed JSU for most of the first set, but were unable to hang on for an early 1-0 lead. A late 3-0 run gave Nicholls a 20-16 edge and a kill by Weimer made the score 22-20; however, the Gamecocks used three kills and an ace to end the match with a 25-22 win.
The second was back-and-forth, with Nicholls holding its last lead at 17-16. Four straight points put the home team ahead and the Colonels never recovered. The momentum for JSU carried over into the final set as Nicholls was held to its lowest point total for the season in the 25-9 loss.
Schwartz led the Colonels with nine kills and Tobison added eight.
