THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team heads to Texas in search of its first Southland Conference victory of the season as the Colonels take on Sam Houston State on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. before a Saturday matchup against Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m.
Thursday's meeting against the Bearkats (6-9, 0-2) will have live stats, while SFA's contest will be streamed live on ESPN3.
Nicholls (4-13, 0-2) is not only looking for its first conference triumph after dropping two at home last week, but the Colonels are currently on a nine-match losing streak. The Red and Gray pieced together three consecutive wins in the beginning of the month, including a victory over rival UL Lafayette, but have won just five sets during the recent skid.
Stephanie Tobison leads the Colonels in kills at 2.06 per set, followed by
Brieanna Hill (1.95),
Kali Schwartz (1.93) and
Kaci Eaton (1.91).
Lucija Barac posts a team-high 21 aces and is averaging 4.42 assists per set.
The Colonels are also aiming to put an end to Sam Houston's 15-match winning streak in the series. The Bearkats enter the matchup looking for their first league win as well after falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and SFA (9-6, 2-0). Sam Houston is led by Jordyn Vaughn with 3.26 kills per game.
The Ladyjacks host McNeese on Thursday before taking on the Colonels. SFA has won three of its last four matches, with the one loss coming against Baylor. The 'Jacks are paced by Abby McIntyre with 2.50 kills at a .231 clip.
Following the two matches in Texas, the Colonels will head to Mississippi to face the Devilettes of MVSU. First serve on Tuesday, Oct. 4 is scheduled for 7 p.m.
