Colonels Head to Florida for Best Western Osprey Invite

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University volleyball team will look to keep its hot streak going as the Colonels make way for Jacksonville, Fla. for three matches in the Best Western Osprey Invite, hosted by North Florida.
 
The Colonels (4-4) open up play against North Florida at 12 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 4:30 matchup against Florida International. Nicholls wraps up the weekend on Saturday against Mercer at 1 p.m.
 
Nicholls' three-match streak started last Friday with a shutout against Alabama A&M. The Colonels then took care of instate rival Louisiana-Lafayette in four sets before picking up a midweek win over Southern on Tuesday.
 
Brieanna Hill leads the team over the last three matches with 2.8 kills per set, totaling 28.  The sophomore was instrumental in the defeat against her former squad, ULL, finishing the match with 14 kills. Also racking up kills over the last three are Stephanie Tobison (2.4/24) and Kali Schwartz (2.1/21).
 
Defensively, Alexa Perry is three digs from reaching 100 on the season, averaging 3.46 per set. At the net, Emily Weimer is nearly doubling the second-most blocks on the team as she had 28 on the year. Hill and Sydney Lerille, who were both named to the all-tournament team last weekend, have 15 each.
 
North Florida (5-3) heads into the tournament ranked second in the nation in total kills (432). Carina Hoff leads the Ospreys with 100 in 34 sets for a 2.94 average. Morgan Van Alstine is ninth in the nation in total blocks (38) and ranks sixth in block assists (35).
 
FIU (2-4) is led by Katie Hogan, who is tops on the team in kills (56) and service aces (41). She was named to the Jaguar Invitational All-Tournament Team last weekend, which included helping lead the Panthers to a win over Southland member Soutehastern Louisiana.
 
Mercer (3-3) is on a two-match win streak after victories over Georgia State and William & Mary in Nashville. The Bears' best player statistically has been Tori Penrod, who ranks in the top 20 of the NCAA in digs per set at 5.25.
