Colonels ink six during early signing period

THIBODAUX, La. – Head coach Seth Thibodeaux announced Monday that the Nicholls State University baseball program added pitchers Brandon Babin, Nick Hill, Trever Kilcrease, Shane Mejia Jr. and Tyler Theriot, and outfielder Mason Turner during the early signing period.

"(Assistant coach) Zach (Butler) and (associate head coach) Walt (Jones) did a great job addressing needs with this class," Thibodeaux said. "We are fortunate to have the type of people in our admissions department that help make our jobs easier in terms of recruiting players here.  It is a total team effort by everyone here."

LHP Brandon Babin
Raceland, La. (Central Lafourche HS)

Thibodeaux on Babin: "Brandon will be able to make an immediate impact for us on the mound.  He is a strike-throwing lefty that can work on both sides of the plate. He is a leader, and he's a tough kid and very competitive. He'll be a great student here. He's got a family full of Colonels so he knows what being a Colonel is all about. He plays for Simon Badeaux at CLHS."

RHP Nick Hill
Sugar Land, Texas (Fort Bend HS)

After his junior season, Hill earned District 20-6A first team honors. Hill is a four-year member of the National Honor Society.

Thibodeaux on Hill: "Coach Butler went back near his home and was able to pull out a good one in Nick.  He has a ton of upside. He will be a hard throwing righty with a three-pitch mix. His body is not done growing either. He comes from an awesome family and is also a great student. He is a winner and his attitude is infectious. He'll end up being a great leader here. His family is great, and he's coming here to get a degree with a championship ring on his finger.  He plays for a great program at Fort Bend Austin for coach Randy Ursery."

RHP Trever Kilcrease
Panama City Beach, Fla. (Gulf Coast State/Arnold HS)

In his first season at Gulf Coast State College, Kilcrease posted a 7-3 record with two saves, a 3.94 ERA and a 2:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Thibodeaux on Kilcrease: "Trever will fill another immediate need for us on the mound.  He is a hard-throwing righty that can spin it and change speeds. He will pitch on both sides of the plate. He is a hard-nosed competitor. I have a lot of respect for his junior college coach, Mike Kandler, and the program he runs there."

LHP Shane Mejia Jr.
Belton, Texas (Belton HS)

Mejia, a three-year varsity player, holds Belton's single-game strikeout record with 18.

Thibodeaux on Mejia: "Shane is going to compete for a spot in our rotation right away. His pitch ability is not the only thing that drew us to him. He's a tough kid with a great work ethic on and off the field. His grit and determination come from his upbringing. He will be an upper 80's lefty with a three-pitch mix.  I can't wait to get him here. He comes from a good program at Belton led by coach Mark Kruger."

LHP Tyler Theriot
Port Allen, La. (Brusly HS)

Theriot capped off a stellar junior campaign at Brusly by being selected to All-District, All-Metro and All-State First Teams.

Thibodeaux on Theriot: "Tyler is going to be a great one here. He will come in and pitch for us right away. I love his makeup and demeanor. He can change speeds but will locate his fastball where he wants it. He is used to winning coming from Brusly where those guys are well coached by coach Dupont. He is a great student, comes from a great family and is a hard worker - all traits that help make Nicholls special."

OF Mason Turner
Houma, La. (Terrebonne HS)

Turner earned All-District Honorable Mention honors his freshman and sophomore seasons at Terrebone and an All-District Second Team selection following his junior year.

Thibodeaux on Turner: "We arefortunate to be able to get a player like this from our backyard. Mason brings some athleticism and versatility to our team. He can play multiple positions, and we like his swing. Mason is an even better person and a great student. He comes from a great family and will be a great fit here. He plays for John Gatlin at Terrebonne."
