THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's basketball team begins league play Thursday in a contest against Northwestern State University. Tipoff at Stopher Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Colonels (6-7) have fared well recently in conference home openers, winning each of their last five. Nicholls' 89.5 points per game currently ranks 10th in Division I and is the second-highest in program history.

The Colonels dropped their last game to Seattle University, 95-89, never fully recovering from an early 21-point deficit. Senior Jahvaughn Powell dropped a season-high 21 points while shooting 5-for-6 from three-point range. Fellow senior Roddy Peters posted 26 points, marking his 12th double-digit scoring performance this season. Peters' 19.1 points per game ranks second in the Southland Conference.

The Demons (3-8) are coming off of a tough road stretch at Oklahoma and Utah, losing the two outings by a combined 59 points. Northwestern State's lone Division I victory came at ULM by a score of 76-61. The Demons are fronted offensively by seventh-year point guard Jalen West (12.3 ppg).
