Final Stats HOUSTON – The Nicholls State University baseball team limited Wake Forest to four hits, but one was a 3-run shot in the third and it was more than enough runs for the Demon Deacons as the Colonels fell in their opener, 5-0, Friday evening.
Despite the solid outings on the mound from
Cole Stapler (0-1) and
Mike Hanchar, the Colonel offense was held to a single base hit against their counterpart Connor Johnston, who tossed a shutout and struck out six. The lone hit came off the bat of
Troy Cahill to lead off the third.
Wake Forest grabbed the 3-0 advantage when Stuart Fairchild homered in the bottom half of the third. A single and a hit-by-pitch set up the two-out home run. The Demon Deacons added an insurance run in the fourth on an error and one more in the eighth.
Stapler lasted 4.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on three hits and struck five. Hanchar also pitched 4.0 innings and struck out six.
Only three Colonels reached base as
Kyle Knauth and
Chet Niehaus reached on walks.
