NEW ORLEANS – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team began its 2017 Southland Conference schedule with a 5-2 setback at New Orleans Friday at the University Tennis Center.
The Colonels came out on top in doubles play by winning courts 1 and 3, but
Sam Meessen was the lone player for Nicholls to earn a win in singles. The Privateers won all five singles matches in straight sets.
"It was nice to be in a conference match. There was a lot of good competitive tennis across the line," said head
Greg Harkins. "We gained valuable experience from the competitive atmosphere and will continue to grow and improve from it and play complete matches from beginning to end."
Oleksander Podgursky and
Max Sinn started things off with a 6-3 win on the No. 3 court, but UNO evened it up by taking court 2. Meessen and
Bernard Wezeman then clinched the point by defeating Jeffrey Hsu and Federico Boscarino, 6-4.
UNO won the first match in singles before Meessen took down Boscarino, 6-2, in each set. But the Colonels were unable to get another point in their season opener.
UP NEXT
The Colonels will host Mississippi Valley State for two midweek matches on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. Admission for all home tennis matches is free of charge.
