Colonels blanked against No. 14 Ole Miss

BILOXI, Miss. – The Nicholls State University baseball team was limited to four hits against No. 14 Ole Miss as the Rebels picked up a 5-0 victory over the Colonels Tuesday night at MGM Park.

With the loss, Nicholls slipped to 9-7 on the season and 0-2 against SEC programs this season. Ole Miss improved to 12-5 on the year.

The Rebels used a 2-run home run in the first inning to jump out in front and doubled their lead in the fourth. Kyle Craft (0-2) left after 3.0 innings on the mound for the Colonels and Ole Miss tacked on one more on a solo shot in the sixth.

Craft allowed four earned runs on five hits and struck out two. Alex Ernestine tossed four innings of relief, fanning three and surrendered a run on five hits, while Austin Bollinger pitched a hitless eighth.

Offensively, Gavin Wehby had one of the four hits, doubling in the first. The Colonels also put a runner in scoring position in the second after singles by Lee Clark and Alex Tucker, but the next two batters were retired.

The final two outs of the second started an impressive run for Ole Miss starter Ryan Rolison, who retired 14 of his last 16 batters faced. The lone exception was Chet Niehaus, who walked in the third and singled in the sixth. Rolison (3-0) finished with seven strikeouts and walked one.

Ole Miss racked up 10 hits in the win, with four players recording two hits each. Tate Blackman fueled the offense with three RBIs, with two coming off his first-inning homer.
