THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team put an end to a four-match skid with a hard-fought 5-2 victory over Alcorn State Wednesday afternoon at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
The Colonels swept doubles play before going on to win four of the six singles matches. Nicholls (5-7) clinched the victory after
Max Sinn picked up a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles.
"This was a good win against a tough team. On every court the matches were competitive," Sinn said. "I focused on what I had to do and executed well enough to win my match."
Nicholls took care of business in doubles, started by Sinn and
Oleksander Podgursky with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Bernard Wezeman and
Sam Meessen followed with a 6-2 win at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point, and
Leo Santos and
Cornelius Schramm completed the sweep with a 6-4 win.
In singles play, Nicholls jumped out to a 3-0 victory after straight-set wins by Wezeman and Santos at No. 2 and 5 singles, respectively. Santos picked up the victory after moving up from No. 6.
"I had a game plan and I didn't execute it that well in the first set but played the tiebreaker well enough to win. In the second set, I executed much better, hitting more first serves in and coming to the net more," Santos said.
Meessen fell at No. 1 in straight sets, but Sinn gave Nicholls the victory by taking a 6-3, 6-2 decision at 3. The final two matches went three sets with Podgursky winning at 4, while Shramm came up short at 6.
"It is always nice to win on your home courts. We came out with more intensity and played complete matches", said assistant coach
Eric Sturgis. "This was a good win over a solid Alcorn State team."
