THIBODAUX, La. – Senior
Cole Stapler allowed a lone unearned run in eight innings of work and the Nicholls State University baseball team pushed two runs across the plate in the seventh to knock off Texas Southern, 2-1, Friday night at Ray E. Didier Field.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh trailing 1-0, Nicholls (16-11) used two hits and some errant pitching by Texas Southern (8-18) to take the lead.
Alex Tucker started the rally with a one-out double and following a hit-by-pitch,
Chet Niehaus singled up the middle to load the bases.
Juan Givan then tied the game on a five-pitch walk and
Gage Teer was hit by a pitch to put Nicholls up 2-1.
After Stapler (3-3) kept the Tigers scoreless in the eighth,
Adam Tarver came in to pitch the ninth and retired TSU in order for his fourth save of the season.
Stapler scattered five hits in the victory and struck out six. He walked Kamren Dukes (2-for-2) twice on the night, including once to lead off the fourth which led to a run. Dukes stole second and moved to third on the play when Tucker's throw went out to center field. A sacrifice fly by Jose Camacho gave TSU the early 1-0 lead.
The Colonels struggled against TSU starter Seth Oliver (3-2) until breaking through in the seventh. Niehaus (2-for-3) led off the game for Nicholls with a base hit and Oliver went on to keep the Colonels without another one until
Ethan Valdez slapped a single to right in the sixth. Nicholls loaded the bases in the inning with the help of two walks, but was unable to break the shutout.
Oliver was charged with two of the free passes in the seventh, including the bases loaded walk to Givan to tie the game. Michael Villanueva came in to try to keep the score tied, but beaned Teer on the first pitch, giving Teer his second hit-by-pitch of the game.
Joey Morales recorded the Colonels' other hit and had four assists at short. Givan also had four assists at second and robbed a hit with a diving stop in the third inning. Stapler had a no-hitter through 5.2 innings before Dukes doubled down the third base line.
