NEW ORLEANS – Senior catcher Alex Tucker and junior outfielder Gavin Wehby supplied two hits apiece, but the Nicholls State University baseball program dropped a 9-3 decision to Tulane University Tuesday night at Turchin Stadium.
Tulane (15-18) commenced the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Hunter Williams sent the first pitch he saw to the scoreboard in left-center for a solo homer.
Green Wave outfielder Grant Brown added two more runs in the second frame on a two-run homer to nearly the same location.
The Colonels (18-17) responded in the third inning with a three-spot highlighted by a two-RBI bloop single to center field from Tucker.
Two solo homers in the bottom half allowed Tulane to regain the lead 5-3.
Nicholls' pitching staff held Tulane in check for the next two innings. The bottom of the sixth inning, however, saw four walks and two soft singles to the outfield, allowing the Green Wave to increase the margin to 8-3.
Senior reliever Daniel Goff limited the damage when he fielded a hard Williams liner with the bases loaded for a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.
The Colonels utilized 10 pitchers but were unable to mount a comeback, managing two hits in the final six innings of play.
Nicholls' pitchers allowed just four hits through the final 5.2 innings but struggled with control as they issued eight free passes that included one hit by pitch.
Freshman Logan Alleman suffered the first loss of his career, allowing two runs and two hits in 0.1 innings pitched.
Brandon Issa (2-0) earned the win for Tulane, allowing just one hit through four innings as the first reliever.
Wehby's multiple-hit outing extended his hitting streak to eight games and reached base streak to 16.
