THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team rallied with two late runs against Texas Southern, but the Colonels were unable to complete the comeback as they fell, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Ray E. Didier Field.
With the loss, Nicholls (17-12) saw its eight-game home winning streak come to an end as they dropped their record at The Did to 14-4 on the season. The win for Texas Southern prevented the Colonels' third three-game sweep of the season while improving their record to 9-19.
Chet Niehaus led Nicholls with three of the team's seven hits, while
Joey Morales and
Quade Smith each drove in a run. Three of the Colonels' hits came in the eighth which led to a pair of runs to make the score 3-2. Morales singled and drove in the first run and Smith was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to add another. But with one down and the bases still full, Tiger reliever Darius Boykins got out of the jam when Niehaus grounded into a 5-2-3 double play.
In the ninth with two outs,
Gage Teer was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game. Pinch runner
Troy Cahill moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but Boykins got
Gavin Wehby to fly out to end the game.
TSU had nine hits in the win, with six coming off Colonel starting pitcher
Mike Hanchar (2-2). The senior lefthander went 5.0 innings with three earned runs and struck out six.
Daniel Goff tossed 3.0 innings out of the bullpen and allowed three hits and struck out three, and
Adam Tarver forced a double play and a lineout in the ninth.
Michael Villanueva (5-1) earned the win for TSU, pitching 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and four hits. Villanueva walked six batters, but the Colonels were unable to take advantage.
The Tigers were led on offense by Lucca Gaudencio and Jose Camacho with two hits each. TSU scored on a groundout in the third before adding two in the sixth. O.J. Oloruntimilehin had an RBI single in the sixth and Horace LeBlanc drove in the final run on a sacrifice fly.

The Colonels will look for the season sweep against rival Louisiana-Lafayette with a nonconference matchup scheduled for Tuesday, April 4 in Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
