SCORESHEET
BEAUMONT, Texas – The Nicholls State University men's tennis team was looking to pick up an upset victory over top-seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday in the Southland Conference Tournament, but the Islanders duplicated their performance from the earlier matchup this season with a shutout 4-0 victory.
Aiming to avenge a 7-0 loss to the Islanders on March 15, the Colonels (5-11) were unable to come away with a victory in doubles as they were defeated on the No. 2 and 3 courts.
Oleksander Podgursky and
Max Sinn fell, 6-3, while
Leo Santos and
Cornelius Schramm were shutout at No. 3.
Sam Meessen and
Bernard Wezeman trailed 4-3 at No. 1 when play was suspended.
In singles play, Podgursky won his first set on the No. 4 line against Paul Cook, 7-6 (10-6), but it would be the only win for Nicholls on the day. Santos dropped his match in straight sets at No. 5 before Schramm was defeated by Gonzalo Achondo at No. 6 to give the Islanders a 3-0 edge.
The clinching point for AMCC came on the No. 3 court as William Mottet handed Sinn a 6-3, 6-2 setback. Despite the first-set victory, Podgursky's match was one of three that went unfinished.
The Islanders (16-8) advance to play for the championship Saturday against Lamar for the fourth consecutive season. LU defeated New Orleans in its first-round match, 5-0.
