HUNTSVILLE, Texas – In a contest that featured six long balls, the Nicholls State University baseball program fell 11-2 to Sam Houston State University Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Don Sanders Stadium.
Nicholls starter
Mike Hanchar allowed just four hits through the first three innings, but two of those left the park as solo homers to give SHSU (23-9, 12-0 SLC) a 2-0 advantage.
Junior infielder
Gage Teer helped the Colonels (18-16, 5-7 SLC) respond in the next half-inning as he lifted a 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall.
Junior outfielder
Gavin Wehby followed with a triple to right field. He was plated on a grounder from senior catcher
Alex Tucker, tying the game at two apiece.
Wehby's three-bagger extended his reached base streak to 15 and hitting streak to seven.
Bearkats catcher Robie Rojas put SHSU back ahead when he connected on a leadoff solo homer in the next half-inning. The Bearkats then used a six-run fifth inning, highlighted by a Lance Miles grand slam, to break the game open.
Hanchar fell to 2-3 as he allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks. The redshirt senior lefty also fanned three batters.
SHSU starter Dakota Mills improved to 4-2, giving up two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings pitched. He struck out six and walked none.
The Colonels conclude their four-game road swing with a quick trip to New Orleans Tuesday to face Tulane. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
