Colonels drop conference opener at McNeese Tuesday

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Senior outside hitter Stephanie Tobison neared a double-double as the Nicholls State University volleyball team fell in straight sets Tuesday against McNeese State University at Memorial Gym.

Tobison accumulated a team-high 10 digs and eight kills. Senior middle blocker Emily Weimer and junior right-side hitter Brieanna Hill added seven and six kills, respectively.

The Colonels (2-12, 0-1 SLC) totaled 27 kills in 96 attempts but were hampered by 21 attacking errors.

The Cowgirls (9-6, 1-0 SLC) rode Shanna Spree offensively. She fired a match-high 12 kills on a .647 clip. Spree chipped in five assisted blocks to McNeese's 12 as a squad.

Nicholls held a 6-5 edge in the opening frame until the Cowgirls scored six in a row to take control. Weimer hammered five of her kills in the first set.

A kill from Hill in the second had the Colonels within one at 11-10 before McNeese responded by closing the set on two 6-1 runs.

Nicholls was unable to break momentum in the third set as the Cowgirls tallied the first two points and never lost the lead.

The Colonels resume conference play Saturday at Stopher Gym. First serve against Houston Baptist is set for 1 p.m. CT.
