THIBODAUX, La. – Winners of four of the last five games, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team faces the University of Central Arkansas Saturday afternoon at Stopher Gymnasium. Tipoff will occur approximately 30 minutes after the women's contest.
The Colonels (10-8, 4-1 SLC) have jumped out to their best start in league play since 2014. It marks just the second occurrence since 1998 that Nicholls starts 4-1 in the Southland Conference. The Colonels boast a 7-2 record at home this season with a 3-0 mark against conference opponents.
Senior
Roddy Peters has scored 75 points in the last three games, including a 26-point outburst in the Colonels' 85-80 win over McNeese. Fifty-one of those points came in the second half. Peters ranks second in the conference with 18.5 points per game.
Freshman
Kevin Johnson notched a career-high 19 points against the Cowboys and hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute to go to make it a two-possession game. Johnson has started 14 straight games and leads the squad with a 3.1 assist-to-turnover ratio and 29.7 minutes per game.
In SLC matchups, Nicholls ranks first in field-goal percentage (.481) and steals per game (8.8).
The Bears' (9-9, 3-2 SLC) roster contains the Southland's leading scorer in Jordan Howard (24.8 ppg). Freshman Deandre Jones recorded the second double-double in program history during his first career start, managing 13 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in UCA's double overtime victory at Lamar.
The last time these two teams faced off at Stopher, senior guard
Jahvaughn Powell banked a game-tying three before the Colonels ultimately prevailed 96-89 in overtime as Powell tallied the final 11 points for Nicholls.
This game has a special included for the Colonels next home contest against Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on Tuesday. Attendees to the game against the Islanders will receive a discount based on Nicholls' field-goal percentage against the Bears.
