THIBODAUX, La. – A scoring drought that lasted 6 minutes and 23 seconds ultimately resulted in a 67-63 loss for the Nicholls State University men's basketball squad Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana University on Broussard Court at Stopher Gym.
"I think we didn't do a good job of taking care of the ball," Nicholls head coach
Richie Riley said. "We didn't do a good job of executing on offense or defense. Our execution was poor, and I tip my hat to them. They did a good job guarding us and turned it into their type of game where it was slower and less possessions."
The Colonels (13-9, 7-2 SLC) missed three shots and committed five turnovers during the cold spell as an eight-point second-half advantage turned into a six-point deficit with 4:52 to play. Before the downfall, Nicholls led by as many as 10 after a 13-point run.
The Colonels never fully recovered, and freshman
Kevin Johnson had two of his three potential game-tying free throws rim out with four seconds left.
SLU (13-9, 7-2 SLC) snapped Nicholls' five-game winning streak with the help of 20 points from Moses Greenwood and 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals from star point guard Marlain Veal.
Senior
Tevon Saddler recorded his second consecutive double-double, adding 10 points and 10 boards. Fellow senior
Roddy Peters registered a game-high 22 points, and
Kimani Jackson rounded out the Colonels' double-figure scorers with 11.
Nicholls returns to action next Saturday at New Orleans, commencing a two-game road stretch. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
