Colonels battle adversity for 72-71 win at HBU

HOUSTON – In a contest with 53 personal fouls called, it was only fitting that senior Roddy Peters knocked down a game-winning free throw with 21 seconds to play to lift the Colonels to a 72-71 win over Houston Baptist University Saturday at Sharp Gym.

Following Peters' free throws, the Colonels (9-8, 3-1 SLC) forced three straight misses from the Huskies (4-12, 0-3 SLC), giving Nicholls its first win at HBU since 2014. Peters scored 18 of his 24 points in the second half. The Washington D.C. native tallied eight field goals and eight free throws.

"Anytime you can find a way to win on the road it's huge," head coach Richie Riley said. "We battled through foul trouble and adversity all night. Our guys were tough enough to finish the job. I'm proud of the growth that our team is showing and we need to continue to get better."

The Colonels withstood an early 10-2 Huskies run, taking a 40-39 lead at the break behind 11 first-half points from senior sharpshooter Stevie Repichowski. Repichowski knocked down all three long-range shots and both free throws in the first period. Nicholls only converted two of its first six free throws before finding its rhythm to make the final six.

The Colonels held HBU to just 36 percent from the field, including 31 percent from three-point range, The Huskies scored 14 of their 32 second-half points from the charity stripe.

HBU's David Caraher poured in a game-high 26 points which included 12 free throws. Nicholls' bench outscored the Huskies' 48-13.

The Colonels will enjoy the next two weeks back in Stopher Gym, beginning Wednesday against McNeese at 7 p.m.
