THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University soccer team recorded just two shots Sunday, resulting in two goals and a 2-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin at the Nicholls Soccer Complex on Senior Day.
The Ladyjacks (3-7-3, 1-4-3 SLC) fired 21 shots before the Colonels (3-12, 1-7 SLC) managed their first in the 70th minute, a low grounder from junior
Blaire Laiche that flew past goalkeeper Allyson Halliday.
Nicholls' next attempt came in the 84th minute. Junior
Chloe Shipway played a high lob that landed between junior
Kristy Helmers, Halliday and an SFA defender. Helmers tapped the ball around the opposition, rolling it into the back of the net to hand the Colonels a 2-0 advantage, a lead that would not be relinquished.
"I think this (game) could change around our season completely," Nicholls senior
Francesca Curteis said. We're definitely going to have more confidence. I think we've kind of had that hope that we can do it, but it just hasn't happened for us. I think this is that turnaround that makes it possible. This shows that winning games is possible and good times are ahead."
The Colonels outshot the Ladyjacks 2-1 in the final 20 minutes of the contest. Junior
Roosa Hurmerinta totaled seven saves. Freshman
Celine Schot dished out an assist on Laiche's score.
The bulk of SFA's offense came from striker Katelyn Termini's eight shots. Sophia Fondren added four attempts and Katie Jennings and Breanna Moore tallied three apiece.
Nicholls concludes the regular season with three consecutive road matches, commencing with a 7 p.m. battle Friday at UCA.
