KENNESAW, Ga. – The Nicholls State University men's golf team raced out to fifth-place after shooting a 296 in Monday's opening round of the Pinetree Intercollegiate, but the Colonels added 10 strokes to their second-round score and ended the day 10th out of 11 teams.
Despite two eagles in the first round - one by senior Jack Lee on 11 and freshman Warut Wongrungroj's first of his career on hole 16 - the Colonels struggled on par 5s for the day, shooting a collective 8-over. Nicholls was just one of three teams to have multiple eagles.
Sophomore Connor Campbell led the team with a 2-over 146, tying for 16th place. After shooting 2-over 74 in the opening round, he recorded six birdies in the second to shoot even.
Lee and classmate Baker Stevenson both shot 147s to tie for 21st. Lee led Nicholls in the first 18 with a 2-under 70, helped by his eagle and two birdies, while Stevenson birdied two of his last three holes for a 1-under 71. But the second time through was unkind for both as Stevenson finished with a 4-over 76 and Lee shot a 77.
Wongrungroj wrapped up his day with 81s for a 162, and Liam Bryden shot 81-83--164.
The Colonels' 602 edged Belmont by one stroke for 11th, and they sit three behind Northern Illinois for ninth. Western Kentucky leads the field with an 11-under 570.
Nicholls will wrap up the invitational Tuesday morning with the final round. The Colonels start on hole 10 and begin play at 9 a.m. For live stats, follow here.
