THIBODAUX, La. – Junior
Heidi Carpenter registered her second triple-double of the season during Nicholls State University's five-set loss to the University of the Incarnate Word Thursday night at Stopher Gym.
Carpenter totaled 25 assists, 14 digs and 10 kills to become the 15th Division I women's volleyball student-athlete to record multiple triple-doubles this season. Freshman
Aaliyah Burras and sophomore
Sydney Swann eclipsed career highs with 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman
Kylie Lockhart accumulated a career-high 25 digs in her first match as libero.
The Colonels (3-19, 1-9 SLC) looked ready to play early, scoring the first five points of the match. Nicholls was ahead by six at 13-7 and 20-14 and held set point at 24-20. The Cardinals (6-15, 4-7) countered with five straight points via kills. After the two sides traded points, a Nicholls attack error shifted the set and momentum towards UIW.
Leading 8-7 in the second set, the Colonels put together a 6-0 run behind the service of Carpenter to build a lead that would not be relinquished. The Cardinals saved six set points at 24-15 before Swann tied the match with a kill down the line. Burras pummeled four kills in five attempts during the set.
A four-point UIW spurt gave the opposition an 11-6 edge in the third. Nicholls regained the advantage at 16-15 with five consecutive points as Burras' float serve put the Cardinals constantly out of system. UIW rallied with another 4-0 run later in the frame that gave it a 21-18 lead, one that would not be squandered.
Tied at 14 in the fourth set, a kill from freshman
Katie Jones sparked a five-point scoring barrage that was helped by the float serve of senior
Jade Piper. The Colonels secured three blocks in the frame, limiting the Cardinals to a .083 (12-8-48) attacking percentage.
Nicholls jumped out to a 4-1 advantage in the deciding set, but it was quickly erased as UIW responded with five in a row. Bethany Clapp converted four kills on six attempts to lift the Cardinals to a 15-9 victory.
Clapp piled up a match-high 23 kills, including seven in the opening set. Setter Pilar Gonzaba came off the bench and recorded a double-double with 35 assists and 12 digs. Libero Madelynn Miller chipped in a match-high 27 digs.
The Colonels will have a weekend away from competition before traveling to Abilene Christian for a match on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
