THIBODAUX, La. – Graduate transfer
Jeremiah Jefferson dropped a career-best 31 points as the Nicholls State University men's basketball squad picked up an 84-67 victory over the University of Mobile Saturday at Stopher Gym.
"We got off to a great start – we were really moving it offensively," head coach
Austin Claunch said. "Our defense usually triggers our offense. We hit some shots early and our energy was great. We played a great first half – unselfish, locked in and focused. We even played a great second half all the way until about the 8-minute mark – I think we were up 30 or 31 - and just lost our way. From an older team, we need more. We need to finish games better."
Jefferson connected on two early treys, following back-to-back triples by junior
Danny Garrick, that put the Colonels (6-6) ahead 14-2. Jefferson collected 21 points in the first half, shooting 7-of-8 from the field, including a 4-of-5 effort from beyond the arc. Nicholls built a 52-29 halftime advantage as the Dallas native notched 11 of the Colonels final 13 points down the stretch.
Nicholls was able to hang on to the win despite being outscored 38-32 in the second half. The Colonels boasted a 10:2 assist-to-turnover ratio in the first half but a 4:15 in the second. The Rams (5-4) put together a 10-0 run late during a 2:47 Nicholls scoring drought to pull within 21 at the 6:08 mark, but the Colonels were able to hang on for the win.
Sophomore
Kevin Johnson contributed 16 points and junior
Elvis Harvey set a new career high with 15. Junior
Danny Garrick rounded out the double figure scorers as he added 12. Mobile was fronted by Darvin Jones' 12 points.
Nicholls returns to action Dec. 29 against Campbellsville Harrodsburg in its final non-conference game of the season. Tipoff at Stopher Gym is scheduled for 1 p.m.
