THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team received four hits and all three RBIs from its first four hitters despite a 6-3 loss to Stony Brook University Sunday night at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
Junior infielder
Ethan Valdez, moved in the lineup to leadoff hitter, fronted the squad with two hits while seniors
Gage Teer and
Kyle Knauth produced the RBIs.
The Seawolves (3-0) got a run across in the first inning on a throwing error, but the Colonels (0-3) quickly responded in the bottom half on a two-RBI double to left-center field from Teer. Unfortunately SBU answered in the next half-inning with an RBI single from Cristian Montes and plated another on a bases-loaded balk to take a 3-2 lead.
In the seventh inning, Nicholls was slightly too slow on what would have been an inning-ending double play, resulting in another Seawolves run. Knauth smashed a ball right back at the pitcher, plating freshman
Xane Washington to put the deficit back to one at 4-3.
A throwing error to home and a bases-loaded walk gave two more insurance runs to SBU reliever Cole Creighton, but he needed no assistance as he worked a four-inning save allowing just one run on four hits and four strikeouts. Brian Hermann (1-0) picked up the win, tossing five innings with two hits and two earned runs.
Picking up the loss for the Colonels was sophomore lefty
Bryan Taylor (0-1) who went 4.2 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) while striking out five. Junior
Jacob Bedevian threw three solid innings in middle relief, giving up one earned run on three hits.
Nicholls looks to salvage the series on Monday, facing the Seawolves one more time at the Did at 6 p.m.
