The Colonels are coming off a doubleheader sweep at Alcorn State on Tuesday, with 6-1 and 8-1 wins over the Lady Braves. Nicholls scored all but one of its 16 runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to pick up the two victories.
After seven games, the main factor in the Colonels' early success has been its pitching staff. The four hurlers have combined for a 0.96 ERA with 52 strikeouts and a .196 opponent batting average. Leading the way is junior
Megan Landry, who was named Southland Pitcher of the Week on Monday. Landry has been lights out in her four appearances, posting a 0.66 ERA in 21.1 innings pitched and has struck out 28 batters while only walking two. She racked up 10 strikeouts in a win over Appalachian State and highlights the team with a 3-0 record.
Newcomers
Alexis LaBure and
Amanda Holliday have logged the other four starts. Holliday has 10 punchouts in 12.1 innings and a 1.14 ERA, while LaBure has tossed 16.1 innings with 13 strikeouts and sports a 1.71 ERA.
Offensively,
Samantha Mracich leads the team with a .400 batting average and
Kasey Frederick has a team-high nine hits for a .360 average. Frederick came through in the clutch against Holy Cross with a two-run double with two down in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, which Nicholls went on to win.
