NATCHITOCHES, La. – Riding a seven-game winning streak, the Nicholls State University men's basketball squad hopes to clinch a double bye in the Southland Conference Tournament with a win Wednesday at Prather Coliseum against Northwestern State University.
The Colonels (20-9, 14-2 SLC) avoided an upset at home Saturday against New Orleans with a late 30-16 run to ultimately prevail 78-64. Senior guard
Jahvaughn Powell finished with a game-high 22 points and eight steals. It was the second time this season that Powell recorded eight steals, also achieving the feat at Tulane on Dec. 18. The Tallahassee, Florida, native ranks 14
th in the nation with 2.3 steals per game.
Fellow senior
Tevon Saddler totaled 19 points which included a 7-8 effort from the charity stripe. Saddler and leading scorer
Roddy Peters (19.3 ppg) have tallied double figures in 26 of 29 games this season, contributing to the 15
th-highest scoring offense in Division I at 84.3 ppg.
The first matchup against the Demons ended with Nicholls winning by 41 points, the largest SLC margin of victory in school history. Saddler and senior
Kimani Jackson fronted the squad with 14 points apiece followed by Powell's 13 and Peters' 10. Northwestern State's lone double-figure scorer was Ishmael Lane (11), the Demons current leader in points and rebounds per game.
The Colonels have an opportunity to secure their highest win total in conference play since the 1997-98 season, when Nicholls rode a 15-1 record to its last league championship and NCAA appearance.
