THIBODAUX, La. –
Following a successful weekend in Florida, the Nicholls State University softball team will take on Southern Miss Wednesday night (Feb. 28) in Hattiesburg, as part of a home-and-home series with the Golden Eagles. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Nicholls (8-4) will host Southern Miss (6-8) a month later at the newly renovated Swanner Field.

The Colonels and Golden Eagles met twice last season in Southern Miss' Black & Gold Invitational and Nicholls came out on top in both games. In a rare occurrence, the first game was suspended on Friday night and did not continue play until Sunday morning, right before the teams' second scheduled game.

Nicholls trailed, 2-1 when rain caused the game to stop and they would rally for two runs in the seventh inning on Sunday for a 3-2 win. In the second game, Megan Landry struck out 10 batters in a complete game effort as the Colonels won, 3-1.

Landry leads the Colonel pitching staff through two weeks with a 4-2 mark and a 1.37 ERA. The junior tossed her first seven-inning no-hitter over the weekend, leading the Red and Gray to a 1-0 victory over Albany. The Colonel defense was outstanding behind Landry as she recorded just three strikeouts in 23 batters faced. For the season, Landry has fanned 39 batters and has only three walks.

At the plate, Amanda Gianelloni was 'red'-hot all week, batting .545 with two doubles, two triples, and the Colonels' first home run of the season. She leads the team with seven RBIs and is second in batting average (.351) behind Samantha Mracich (.353). Jewel Lara, who had the walk-off RBI in the win over Villanova, is third at .310 and Kasey Frederick rounds out the leaders with a .308 average.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a series win against Jacksonville State, highlighted by a 9-6 victory in their last outing Saturday. USM pounded out 11 hits, led by a 3-for-3 game from Chase Nelson.

In 14 games, Destini Brown has a team-best .519 batting average with as many as hits as games played. Right behind her is Nelson at .400 and eight RBIs.

In the circle, Samantha Robles has been the top pitcher, posting a 3-3 record with a 2.49 ERA. Robles took the loss in the first meeting last year, tossing 3.0 innings of relief.
