Colonels open home schedule Tuesday against MVSU

THIBODAUX, La. – After playing 21 games on the road in five different states, spanning from north Texas to Tampa, Florida, the Nicholls State University softball team is set to make its 2018 home debut at Swanner Field Tuesday against Mississippi Valley State. The doubleheader is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Nicholls (14-7) swept HBU over the weekend and looks to extend its winning streak of five games against the Devilettes.

The Colonels have been nearly unbeatable in Thibodaux over the last two seasons, putting together an impressive 31-4 record. Nicholls has also been stellar in its home debut with its last loss coming in 2013.

Pitching was strong again for the Colonels in their sweep of HBU, led by ace Megan Landry. She picked up a pair of wins and had a 1.17 ERA with seven strikeouts in 12.0 innings pitched. Alexis LaBure was also solid in two appearances, posting a 1.11 ERA with five strikeouts. Landy heads the staff with a 9-3 record and a 2.04 ERA.

At the plate, Nicholls had three players who had five hits each in Houston, led by Kasey Frederick with five RBIs. She is one of seven players with a .300 batting average, ranking third on the team at .348. Amanda Gianelloni has the top slugging percentage (.667) while batting .362 with a team-high 18 RBIs, and Samantha Mracich posts a team-best .364 average.

MVSU brings a 3-14 record to Thibodaux but won its last contest in the University of Memphis Tournament. The Devilettes defeated Tennessee State, 2-1, behind a pair of late-inning runs.

Jodeci Afoa-Tuia leads the team with a .302 batting average and four doubles. In the circle, Alejandra Salazar has tossed 29.2 innings and has 14 strikeouts.
