THIBODAUX, La. – In nearly the same fashion as Wednesday's victory, the Nicholls State University men's tennis team outlasted Alcorn State, 4-3, Thursday to earn its second win in as many days at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Nicholls (4-7) used the same formula against Alcorn State (4-10) as it did Wednesday against New Orleans, winning in doubles before receiving singles victories from
Oleksander Podgursky and
Nestor Giribet Lopez, but this time, it was freshman
Eduardo Marino who would clinch the match.
Classmate
Lewis Cox was the hero yesterday, but he saw his four-match winning streak come to an end as the Braves battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the match. Marino won his first set at No. 5 against Nuno Rocha, 6-3, but could not close it out in the second as he fell 4-6. But in the decisive set, Marino broke serve and was up 5-2 before fighting off Rocha for a 6-4 victory.
Singles play was set up by another strong outing in doubles. Podgursky and
Tobias Lentz took the top court, 6-4, before Cox and Lopez won at 2, 6-3.
Lopez made quick work of Ivan Matas at No. 6 singles, but Alcorn State received its first point with a win at No. 3. Johnathan Parat picked up the win over
Leo Santos.
Podgursky edged Kert Kilumets 7-6 in the first set at No. 1 before Kilumets retired for a 3-1 Colonel lead. But the Braves climbed back into it with wins at 4 and 2.
Marino's win snapped a seven-match skid for the freshman, putting him at 3-7 on the season. At 5-5, Lopez leads the Colonels in singles play this season.
