THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University women's and men's tennis teams hosted Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday for a doubleheader, and the visitors came away with a pair of victories at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
The men's team was handed a 6-1 loss, with
Oleksander Podgursky extending his winning streak to four with a victory at No. 1 singles. The women's squad had two singles matches go three sets, but were unable to pick up a point in a 7-0 loss.
"We got beat by better teams today. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has been on top of the conference for a good part of the last decade, but we fought as hard as we could, didn't give an inch and clawed for every point," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "It was a great lesson today of what we aspire to be moving forward in the future, so I was proud of our team. And a big congratulations to the Islanders, they brought it today and there was no let up. It was inspiring to see, and that's what I relayed to our players to be inspired to push ourselves to that level."
For the women's match,
Stephanie Barnett and
Lingfeng Gu won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, but the Islanders took the top courts 2 and 3, 6-2.
In singles, Nicholls dropped the first matches in straight sets.
Marina Vigil then fell at No. 4 in a tiebreaker before Barnett was defeated at No. 1 against Hortense Boscher, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Gu had a close match at No. 2, but came up short, 7-5, 7-5.
In the men's match, the Islanders won courts 1 and 3 to take a 1-0 lead. They went on to win the first five singles matches in straight sets before Podgursky prevented the shutout. He improved to 3-1 in league play with a win over William Mottet.
