TUCSON, Ariz. – Nicholls State University baseball pitcher
Parker White fired four scoreless innings against the University of Arizona on Saturday, but the Wildcats prevailed 9-3 in the series finale at Hi Corbett Field.
White threw the final four innings for the Colonels (9-18), allowing just two hits while striking out two and walking one. At the plate, senior infielder
Ethan Valdez finished with two hits and two RBIs.
Arizona (16-10) used a five-run second inning to down Nicholls, highlighted by a two-run homer by Donta Williams. Starting pitcher Michael Flynn tossed five innings and allowed three runs to improve to 4-1. Colonels starter
Cayden Hatcher fell to 1-3 as he was pulled after surrendering six runs in two innings.
The Colonels scored first for the second straight game as senior catcher
Kyle Knauth came home on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by senior
Lee Clark in the top of the first inning. Arizona answered with a run of its own in next half-inning on an RBI double by Alfonso Rivas.
The Wildcats' big second inning was supplemented by Rivas and Cal Stevenson RBI singles and a Nick Quintana sacrifice fly.
Valdez would be responsible for Nicholls' final two runs, hitting a single in the third that scored fellow senior
Chet Niehaus and a triple in the fifth to plate senior
Gage Teer.
Quintana socked a three-run homer in the fourth before White entered to tame the Arizona bats.
The Colonels face LSU on Tuesday in Baton Rouge. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
