THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team scored 14 runs in the second inning of a 21-6 victory over Sacred Heart University Tuesday at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
It was the first 20-run performance for the Red and Gray in exactly 13 years, tallying 25 against Memphis on March 6, 2005.
"I don't want this team getting comfortable at all," Nicholls head coach
Seth Thibodeaux said. "For the last few weeks we've kind of gotten soft a little bit and got away from what we're really good at. These guys are working hard, trying to find themselves and fight through some adversity. There was some frustration that came out on some baseballs tonight. I know that tomorrow is a new day and this [Sacred Heart] team is going to be totally different. We've got a long way to go but I am proud of our effort tonight."
The Colonels (2-10) second inning at the plate consisted of 11 hits with the scoring commencing on a two-RBI double down the right-field line from senior outfielder
Lee Clark. Other highlights included a bases-clearing triple by senior
Kyle Knauth and a three-run homer off the bat of freshman
Dane Simon, the first of his career.
Junior Jake Bedevian earned the start for Nicholls, allowing just two earned runs on four hits in four innings. Junior
Parker White (1-1) earned the win, firing 3.2 perfect innings accompanied by seven strikeouts.
The Colonels finished with 17 hits, including three each from senior
Ethan Valdez, redshirt junior
Brady Bell and Clark. Senior infielder
