Colonels dominate Sacred Heart, 10-0, in series finale

THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team bested Sacred Heart University, 10-0, Wednesday night in the series finale on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

"I think our guys kind of went back to their foundation," Nicholls head baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux said. "There are a lot of things that go into it. Some guys are getting healthy. This group has hung in there in the tough times. We have a long way to go. We're not anywhere near where I want to be, but we're starting to play better and play hard. I'm very proud of our guys effort more so tonight than last night."

The Colonels (3-10) pitching tandem of seniors Christian Bahlinger and Jarred Scott, redshirt sophomore Austin Bollinger and sophomore Bryan Taylor allowed just five hits while striking out 11 in the combined shutout. Taylor earned the start, striking out eight in four innings with no hits allowed. Bahlinger (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings to receive the win.

Senior outfielder Lee Clark continued his recent tear, driving in three runs for the second consecutive game. After senior Ethan Valdez hit an RBI double to left-center in the third inning, Clark followed up with a two-run homer to right in the fourth. Clark also roped a double down the right-field line that plated fellow senior Gage Teer in the sixth.

Freshmen Dane Simon and Xane Washington stepped up in the bottom-half of the fifth. Washington scored senior Chet Niehaus on a hit up the middle, and Simon followed up with a two-out bunt single that brought home senior Kyle Knauth.

The Pioneers (2-6) never had a baserunner reach third base, only producing five hits, all of which were singles. Starter Thomas Pinto was handed the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings.

Nicholls returns to action Friday against Northwestern State in its conference opener. First pitch at the Did is scheduled for 6 p.m.
