KATY, Texas – Winners of eight of its last nine, the Nicholls State University men's basketball team holds the No. 2 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, awaiting the winner of No. 3 SFA and No. 7 UCA to face off in the semifinals Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The four-day tournament will be held once again in the Leonard E. Merrell Center. The Colonels earned a double-bye after finishing in the Top 2 of the conference along with Southeastern Louisiana. Nicholls played for the No. 1 seed against the Lions on Saturday but struggled offensively in its first game without senior
Tevon Saddler, scoring less than 60 points for the first time this season.
The Colonels (21-10) dropped their only game against SFA this season and swept UCA. Nicholls is 8-15 all-time and 1-3 as the 2-seed in the SLC Tournament with its lone victory coming against Texas State in 2009, the last time the Colonels advanced to the semifinals.
Nicholls received a host of accolades when the conference announced postseason awards Monday. Head coach
Richie Riley was deemed Coach of the Year and
Roddy Peters was named Newcomer of the Year in addition to First Team honors. Saddler was a Second Team selection and fellow senior
Jahvaughn Powell earned a nod on the All-Defensive Team.
The first three rounds will stream on ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com and the ESPN/WatchESPN apps. The men's championship on Saturday will air on ESPN2.
Press conferences will be available live on the Southland Conference Digital Network at
southland.org/live and the Southland Conference app.
