MATCH RESULTS
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Tuesday showdown at Southern Miss ended in a 6-1 loss for the Nicholls State University men's tennis team, dropping the Colonels to 5-11 on the season.
Eduardo Marino was victorious in his third straight match in singles, picking up a three-set win at No. 5. It was the only match that was not decided in two sets against one of Conference USA's top teams. With the win, the Golden Eagles improved to 18-3.
"We fought hard, but we played against a very mentally tough team," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "Eddy got a solid win against a good senior player. I liked our competitiveness and we are improving match after match, and I think things are looking in our favor towards our match against Lamar. If we can maintain our temperament and raise our level of intensity, we'll be in a good position."
Southern Miss started the match with doubles wins at 2 and 3.
Lewis Cox and
Nestor Giribet Lopez were handed a 6-3 loss before Marino, and
Leo Santos fell 6-1.
In singles,
Alvaro Barranco Vilaltella and Cox dropped 3 and 4, respectively, by the score of 6-0, 6-4. Lopez was defeated, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 while
Oleksander Podgursky came up short at No. 1, 6-4, 6-3.
Tobias Lentz had a competitive match at No. 2 against Teeradon Tortrakul before falling 6-4, 7-6 (4). Marino's match against Daniel Merker was just as close, but after dropping a 7-5 set to start the match, Marino edged Merker in the next two, 7-6 (1), (4).

The Colonels will close out the regular season on Friday at Lamar. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
