Colonels drop final two games to SLU in Hammond

HAMMOND, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team fell in its final two games of the weekend to Southeastern Louisiana University by scores of 10-3 and 9-2 Saturday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

The Colonels (16-25, 7-11 SLC) took a 2-1 advantage in Game 1 in the fourth inning when senior outfielder Lee Clark blasted a two-run homer to right field. Unfortunately, the Lions (27-17, 14-7 SLC) outscored Nicholls 9-1 the remainder of the game. The only other Colonels run was scored via a bases-loaded walk to senior catcher Kyle Knauth in the eighth inning.

Senior Cayden Hatcher fell to 2-5 as he threw 4.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Senior Chet Niehaus and redshirt junior Brady Bell chipped in two hits apiece.

Carlisle Koestler picked up the win, bringing his record to 7-1 this season. He tossed five innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. Bryce Steckler drove in a team-high three runs as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh and scored two on a double in the eighth.

In Game 2, SLU used a six-hit, seven-run first inning, concluded by a two-RBI double by leadoff hitter Cody Grosse down the right-field line, to roll past Nicholls. For the Colonels, freshman Nathan Tribble roped an RBI single to right-center in the second inning. The only other Nicholls run came in the eighth when senior Joey Morales was plated on a double play ball off the bat of Knauth.

Junior Jacob Bedevian lasted just one inning for the Colonels, surrendering eight runs on seven hits. Graduate student Christian Bahlinger had another stellar outing, giving up just three hits in 5.1 innings of work.

Lions starter Corey Gaconi improved to 3-1 as he tossed seven innings of one-run ball complemented by six strikeouts. Grosse went 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

Nicholls travels to Baton Rouge to face Southern on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
