Hatcher’s complete game lifts Colonels to 6-1 victory over Lamar

THIBODAUX, La. – Senior right-handed pitcher Cayden Hatcher's nine-inning gem allowed the Nicholls State University baseball team to stage a 6-1 comeback win against Lamar University Saturday night at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.

Hatcher (3-5) scattered six hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out four and walking two. His only blemish came in the fourth inning when a leadoff single followed by a walk eventually resulted in a sacrifice fly by Cole Secrest.

The Colonels (18-26, 8-12 SLC) received two hits apiece from seniors Joey Morales and Chet Niehaus and freshman Dane Simon. Seniors Lee Clark and Kyle Knauth contributed two RBIs each.

Phillip Ingram and Cole Girouard accounted for five of six hits for the visitors.

After the Cardinals (15-29, 9-14 SLC) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, Nicholls responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Niehaus poked a one-out single to center field that scored Brady Bell.

Hatcher then retired nine of the next 10 batters, giving the Colonels time for their offensive outburst in the eighth. Simon started the rally with a double down the left-field line. With runners at first and third, Morales later lined a single to left field that plated Simon to put the score at 2-1 in Nicholls' favor.

Niehaus then walked to load the bases and Knauth followed with a two-RBI single up the middle. Clark concluded the five-run frame with a bases-clearing, two-RBI double to right-center, putting the Colonels at a comfortable 6-1 advantage.

Hatcher hit the first batter in the ninth but induced a 4-6-3 double play on Cole Coker and struck out Secrest to secure the win. The Red and Grey handed Jack Dallas the loss, dropping his record to 3-4. Dalllas gave up give runs on four hits and four walks in 1.2 innings. Nicholls and Lamar will conclude the series with a rubber match on Sunday at the Did. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
