THIBODAUX, La. – The Nicholls State University baseball team recorded a 5-2 victory over Lamar University on Sunday in the rubber match at Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
Junior
Jacob Bedevian allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out one in 6.2 innings, improving his record to 2-6. The Houston native has quality starts in all four conference outings at the Did this season. Graduate student
Christian Bahlinger picked up his fifth save as he held the Cardinals (15-30, 9-15 SLC) hitless for the final 2.1 innings. The Mandeville native boasts a 1.29 ERA in league play.
Senior infielders
Joey Morales and
Ethan Valdez fronted the Colonels (19-26, 9-12 SLC) at the plate, notching three hits apiece. Morales smacked a double in his first three plate appearances and recorded a team-high three RBIs.
In the first inning, Morales placed his first double down the right-field line, stole third and advanced home on an errant throw by Lamar catcher Chad McKinney to put Nicholls on the board. McKinney would make up for it in the third, smacking a double off the fence in left field before scoring the tying run on an infield single by Cole Girouard.
The Colonels quickly responded in the next half-inning with Morales' second two-bagger that plated Valdez. Morales later scored on a wild pitch to put Nicholls up 3-1.
Freshman
Dane Simon led off the fourth with a single to right field, prompting Valdez to bring him home on a single to center field. Morales, the next batter, drove home Valdez on a double to left that landed just beyond Avery George's outstretched glove and increased the cushion to 5-1.
From the fourth to the seventh, Bedevian recorded 11 straight outs before surrendering three consecutive singles that allowed Lamar to tally its second run. Bedevian gave way to Bahlinger following those three hits.
Cardinals starter Jason Blanchard was stuck with the loss, allowing three earned runs in 3.2 innings.
Nicholls travels to Texas to face Prairie View on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Six of the next seven contests for the Colonels will be away from the Did.
