THIBODAUX, La. – With doubles already played on Feb. 3, the Nicholls State University men's tennis team picked up four wins in singles Sunday to defeat Loyola University New Orleans, 4-2, at the Colonel Tennis Complex.
Loyola (11-6) won doubles over two months ago in the rain-shortened match, but the Colonels received straight-set victories in singles by
Oleksander Podgursky,
Lewis Cox,
Eduardo Marino, and
Nestor Giribet Lopez to earn Nicholls' fifth win of the season.
"We had very consistent play and good effort across the lines, winning the match against what was probably the best Loyola team they've had in the history of the school," said
Greg Harkins, Nicholls tennis head coach. "This is a good showing of where we started at the beginning of the year and where we are today, which is definitely going to help us as we head into our big match this weekend at Lamar."
With the Colonels trailing 1-0 after losing the doubles point, Podgursky quickly tied it up with a near shutout at No. 1 against Sean Presti. Nicholls then reeled off wins by Cox at 5 and Marino at 6 for a 3-1 lead.
The Wolf Pack cut the deficit to one after a win by Tiger Cheung at 3 against
Alvaro Barranco Vilaltella. But Lopez closed it out for the Colonels with a 7-5, 6-4 win at 6 over Joseph Short.
