LAFAYETTE, La. – Nicholls State University shortstop
Joey Morales earned a spot on the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Second Team as the teams were released by the organization Saturday night.
Morales, an All-Southland Conference Second Team performer, totaled 49 hits during conference play, the second-highest among all players. The Fort Myers, Florida, native also posted the SLC's fifth-best batting average at .389 and accumulated a team-high 17 multi-hit performances.
Morales reached base in each of the first 25 SLC contests. Known for his adept glove work and athleticism, he accumulated a .961 fielding percentage and helped turn 28 double plays in league play.
Morales concluded his Nicholls career with 225 starts, all at shortstop and the most by a student-athlete in program history.
Senior
Chet Niehaus collected the sole honorable mention outfield selection. Niehaus, a member of the All-SLC Third Team and All-SLC Defensive Team, highlighted his final campaign with a 21-game hitting streak from April 8 to May 12 and tied fellow senior
Kyle Knauth with 23 RBIs during league play.
The speedy centerfielder ranked ninth in the SLC in on-base percentage (.444), tied for sixth in runs (25) and tied for seventh in homers (five) and walks (19). Niehaus amassed 104 putouts, three assists and just one error in league play for a .991 fielding percentage.
