THIBODAUX, La. – Fifth-year senior
Alison Ward tallied the first goal of her career in the 16
th minute Sunday afternoon despite the Nicholls State University soccer team dropping a 2-1 decision to Grambling State University at the Nicholls Soccer Complex.
Ward found the back of the net after senior
Kristyn Daniels applied pressure with an original attempt that was saved. The keeper's deflection found Ward's foot for an easy tap-in.
The Lady Tigers (1-1) managed an equalizer during the 24
th minute, when Kailey Pena leveraged her way through a Colonel (0-2) defender and past goalkeeper
Jade Gallaher.
Grambling's lone goal in the 56
th minute of the second half proved to be the difference as Kaylee Holt chipped a penalty kick just out of Gallaher's reach. The penalty was given after a Nicholls handball in the box.
The Colonels final threatening scoring opportunity came in the 80
th minute. Junior
Tessa Calabria headed a beautifully played cross from junior
Blaire Laiche, prompting a diving save by Hanna Johnson. Johnson concluded the match with five saves.
Ward supplied the bulk of the Colonels attack with three shot attempts, two of which were on goal. Calabria, Daniels and junior
Chloe Shipway totaled two shots apiece.
The Colonels travel to Mississippi Valley State Friday for a 6 p.m. match in Itta Bena, Mississippi. Following that contest, Nicholls will enjoy a six-match home stretch, commencing with Prairie View A&M on Sunday at 1 p.m.
