THIBODAUX, La. - Senior midfielder
Francesca Curteis tallied two goals in six minutes to lift the Nicholls State University soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Jackson State University Friday evening at Yockey Bernard Field.
Curteis recorded eight shots in the match, three more than JSU's total. The Colonels (1-4) outshot the Lady Tigers (0-4) 24-5, including 11-3 in shots on goal.
"In contrast to the last few games I have played – the last few games I kind of got frustrated when the ball didn't go in," Curteis said. "This game I was just thinking that I have to keep with it, keep making those runs and it will happen, and today it happened."
Nicholls controlled much of the possession in the first half, but it was JSU that struck first. In the 34
th minute, Patricia Calderon chipped a cross that landed perfectly for Jolene Ceniceros to score.
The Colonels continued to pressure the Lady Tigers, finally breaking through in the 88
th minute when senior
Kristyn Daniels played a lovely cross to Curteis who blasted an attempt beyond goalkeeper Faith Toennis.
Just three minutes into extra time, junior
Kristy Helmers struck a power shot that was saved by Toennis, but Curteis followed into an open net to seal the match.
Toennis accumulated nine saves while Nicholls goalkeeper
Roosa Hurmerinta contributed two, a testament to the defense of the Red and Gray.
The Colonels return to action Sunday against Alcorn at 1 p.m. That contest will also be played at Yockey Bernard Field inside the Dr. Richard Morvant Sr. Complex of Champions.
